Accounting Manager/Controller

tempCFO is a rapidly growing accounting firm that specializes in outsourced accounting, tax and CFO consulting for small and medium size businesses (SMBs), including start-up, emerging high-growth, and established companies. We are based in the Silicon Valley but have offices in multiple states.

We are currently looking to add an Accounting Manager/Controller to our outsourced accounting group in both San Jose and San Francisco CA offices. Our team enables management to focus on its core competencies, instead of building an accounting department. Outsourcing can provide the capabilities of a full-featured accounting department at a fraction of the cost of an in-house solution.

The Controller is responsible for the day to day accounting operations of assigned clients and oversight of accounting staff. The controller leads the monthly accounting work with assistance from the Senior Controller or CFO as needed. The controller is responsible for guiding and developing the accounting staff and improvement of internal processes for more efficient workflow. The controller reports to various Senior Controllers or CFOs depending on client assignments.

RESPONSIBILITIES Client Facing Responsibilities

  • Manage client relationships
  • Produce monthly deliverables (submitted to Senor Controller or CFO for review) including:
  • Income Statement, Balance Sheet, Statement of Cash Flows
  • Budget vs. Actual Variance Analysis
  • Update Forecast based on actuals
  • Coordination of tax services with tax department
  • Assist with budget and forecast preparation

 Accounting Responsibilities

  • Review and manage accounting processes, including:
  • General ledger activities, month end close, account reconciliation
  • Accounts receivable and invoicing
  • Accounts payable bill creation and payment processing
  • Payroll processing
  • Payroll tax filings
  • Sales tax filings
  • Cash flow management
  • Account variance analysis

Management / Leadership Responsibilities

  • Develop internal processes for more efficient workflow
  • Oversee staff accountant including management of tasks / responsibilities
  • Train new and existing employees to ensure job growth, identify training needs
  • Keep employees motivated, resolve conflicts, key player in employee morale
  • Assist PM/Controller with engagement budget and engagement economics


  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting or similar field
  • 5+ years of progressive experience in accounting/finance, 3+ years managing staff
  • Strong interpersonal and managerial skills
  • NetSuite & QuickBooks experience is a plus
  • CPA, general tax experience, and small business background are a plus
